RENT DEPOSIT BOND SCHEME
If you are moving into private rented property the landlords or letting agents normally insist on 1 months rent in advance and 1 months rent as adeposit land lords normally for 1 months but some landlords or letting agents want 6-8 weeks rent deposit. The bond amount has to be repaid back to the Council by you over a period of time. The Bond can cover rent arrears at the of your stay and can cover damage to the property that is concidered fair wear and tear. The landlord can claim on the bond until you have left the property.
The rent deposit is based on an interview with a Housing Options Officer based at The Gateway in the town centre. They will want to know about your current housing situation and the reasons you want to leave. A financial statement will also have to be completed to ensure that the property that you want to move to is a home you can afford.
If you are claiming benefits or partial benifits because you work, you can apply for housing benefit to help you pay for the rent. |

Ashford Good Day Project Update
Better Days for People with Learning Disabilities. Keeping you up to date with all of the consultations, research and planning currently going on.
People have said... What's happening for the people from Ashford DOS who are trying out-using the Stour Leisure Centre as a Community Hub on a Monday and Tuesday?
Here's what's happening.... Many people from Ashford DOS already use the Stour Centre. Now some people with complex needs are spending a Monday or Tuesday based there. With support, they will tell us what works well and what else needs to be done so people can access the facilities both at the Stour Centre and in the local community.
Progress so far at the Stour Leisure Centre: * Storage/ furniture- we are starting to identify what we need * Communication- we are getting to know each other. * Supporting people in the community- people are finding out what's available at the Stour Centre and in the local community. * Transport- most people go directly to the Stour Centre and co-ordination of transport is improving. * Activities- trying new activities is being funded using the Social Care Reform Grant. * Other benefits- people are enjoying getting out and about more.
Ashford Gateway Plus - Here's what's happening....... * Internal layout- Consultation is continuing. * Adult changing facilities- we are planning to have these on the 2nd floor. *Activity areas- It will be possible to use each area for a variety of activities. * Access to other areas in the Gateway- will include Adult Education, Library, Computers, Internet etc. |

Development of Brokerage in the Ashford Area During the summer I have attended a five day training course provided by the National Development Team to enable Social Care Brokers in East Kent to work with individuals and their families to manage their person budget. Also training on sensory impairments, with a visit to the Kent Association for the Blind which included viewing a number of resources at their centre in Canterbury, walking along the road with a blindfold with the support of a guide was an experience not easily forgotten, another training day included information from the organisation Deafworks. Naomi Millidine, project worker for the East Kent Brokerage project, Kent County Council has provided talks for the brokers on topics such as Direct Payments, the Kent Card, and the Mental Capacity Act.
I have been working with a number of people developing Person Centred plans, and hope in the near future to work with individuals and their families to provide a Support Plan that will include what they require for the future to be able to live as independently as possible, a Social Care Broker can arrange taster sessions for day care, and provide you with information about a wide range of services. The Support Plan will set out how the individual will spend their personal budget.
Please Contact me if you require further information.

Ashford Community Learning Champions local learning for local people Sharing Opportunities Adults across Ashford are being given the opportunity to take part in the launch of a new learning opportunity, thanks to a grant from The Community Learning Champion awarded to the Ashford Volunteer Centre. Joy Butcher one of the project's development officers said: "This exciting project gives people the chance not just to learn new skills but also benefit from the joys of learning something new." "Hundreds of thousands of adults in England are already part of The Learning Revolution and enjoy many different types of informal learning. Learning has wide reaching benefits and can transform people's personal and professional lives" The Government White Paper, The Learning Revolution, in March 2009. Sets out a new vision for informal adult learning- learning for pleasure and personal, family and community development. Since summer 2009 NIACE- the national Institute of Adult Continuing Education- and its partners have been administering the £3 million CLC support programme, providing support to 50 projects around the country to set up and run community Learning champions projects. A successful outcome of the project would see this project as just the beginning of a lifelong learning journey for people who experience barriers to learning. |

ArtVark
Creative day service for adults with special needs who are able to function independently or who have their own carer with them.
This is an art focused day service run by Helga Picknell. I am a very experienced, fully qualified art teacher with many years of special needs experience. I studied art in Brussels, Belgium and have organised many exhibitions. I taught art for the last 3 years to clients with special needs and teach several art courses for Kent Adult Education.
Techniques include: pencils, pens, pastels, watercolour, acrylic, batik, felt, clay, papier-mache & other media. All aspects will be adapted to individual needs. Clients will be encouraged to reach their full potential and with guidance create thier own masterpieces. Thier work wll be put on display in the building and exhibitions will be organised from time to time.
I decided to start this service as I find it very rewarding helping individuals towards their goals. All clients are different, but it is the ways of finding out what works best for each individual I find challenging. Art is a fantastic medium creatively, socially and in many ways very therapeutic.
Cost: £35 per day £17.50 per half day Hours: 9:30am - 4:30pm Break from 12:30 -1:30 Days: Mondays and Fridays Venue: The Right Track Music School, Javelin House, Henwood Industrial Estate, Ashford, Kent, TN24 8DE (just off junction 10 M20)
The venue is a modern, light, spacious property, but at the moment we are on the first floor, so clients must be able to manage the stairs. We plan to remedy this at the first opportunity. There are full facilities on this floor and there is ample parking.
For more information please contact Helga Picknell on helga.picknell@talktalk.net or 07735448140. If there is no reply, leave a message with your name & number and I will contact you.

What's the difference?
Like any other company we, the directors, are committed to providing high quality products and services to the our customers in the Borough of Ashford and surrounding areas. However our company will be a not for profit organisation that reinvests any surplus into providing benefits to local people with a learning disability.
How will local people benefit?
We will aim to employ both people with a learning disability and others from the local population providing opportunities to create a new workforce who can work together and develop mutual understanding and respect for each other.
Because we are not going to pay dividends to shareholders we will be able to price our goods and services competitively which can only be of benefit to everyone and the local economy.
There are a number of Partnership organisations which include. Mencap, Canterbury Oast Trust, Southern Housing Group, Kent Autistic Trust, Kent Adult Social Services, Parents people with a learning disability and members of the Ashford District Partnership Group all working together to improve Housing options for people with a learning disability.

My name is Antony White and I came to the Ashford LD Community Interest Company for a 1 week placement during my Kent Police Officer training program. I have really enjoyed my time with you all and have met some real characters. The Day Centres Christmas show was outstanding I really enjoyed it (not to mention certain members of staff at the performance!). As I am hoping to get Ashford as my area I feel my week with everyone has been invaluable to help me when I come back after my training. I wish to see you all again soon. |
